Beginners welcome! This workshop combines crochet, and t-shirt alteration by transforming a thrifted or existing T-shirt into something with a more intentional style. Students will learn how to attach yarn to clothing, practice single crochet, and explore simple ways to alter and personalize their garment. We’ll also experiment with fabric and acrylic paints to add another layer of creative expression. The goal is not just to learn a few crochet techniques, but to see an existing garment as a material to transform with rather than something that collects dust or gets disregarded all together.
Students should bring a regular cotton or polyester t-shirt. Please do not bring a t-shirt with a lot of stretch or ribbing to it. Cotton yarn or cotton blends work best, Tapestry needles, crochet hooks (size 4, 4.5, 5 mm) fabric paint. and paint brushes (the painting is an extra thing to do if there is time).

REQUIREMENT: Crochet: 3-Week Fundamentals or working knowledge of basic stitches like single crochet (sc), half double crochet (hdc), double crochet (dc), chain (ch) magic circle, and tying off. If you are new to crochet, please enroll in Crochet: 3-Week Fundamentals before signing up.

This course may be held outdoors or indoors, depending on the weather, so we suggest:
• Dress in layers so you can adjust to the temperature.
• Bring water/beverage and a snack if you need to be comfortable.
• Wear comfortable clothes.

DIRECTIONS: Located in Liberty Station’s Arts District, you can find our studio at the end of the hallway on the 1st floor of the Dorothea Laub Music & Arts Center (Bldg 176) at the corner of Roosevelt & Truxtun, next to The Lot movie theater. There is plenty of free parking. Parking Lot Q is behind our studio — enter via the driveway off Dewey. Across the street in the Vons parking lot, it is also free. REFUNDS: No refunds for tardiness or no-shows. For a refund (minus a 5% processing fee), you must notify us via email 7 days before the start of the class. After 7 days, we cannot offer refunds, as materials and supplies have already been purchased.

TRANSFERS: You may transfer your enrollment spot to someone else, but transfers must happen before the workshop begins. Please email us to let us know who’s coming.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

I’m Arela Rae, an interdisciplinary artist, movement facilitator, and founder of The Upcycle, a creative community centered around sustainable art, fashion and performance. My creative practice is rooted in curiosity and a belief that the things we often overlook hold more value and possibility than we realize.
For me, upcycling isn’t a trendy word. It’s survival, ingenuity and a love letter to nature. I see discarded materials as an invitation to slow down, experiment and imagine a world with a more circular perspective. I want people to leave my classes feeling more connected not only to what they’ve created, but to the earth, themselves and the communities around them. My classes are playful and experimental, but they’re also an opportunity to learn practical ways of integrating sustainable practices throughout life.
