No experience necessary. Age 15+ welcome!

An ancient and eco-centered craft, Natural Dyes are a place to connect with the beauty and bounty of our planet’s rich offerings while creating with color and using our hands and minds to refresh our homes, wardrobes and to create one-of-a-kind palettes.

In this hands-on workshop students will learn the entire process of natural dyeing while incorporating creative design elements through resist dye methods of Shibori. Each student will Shibori and hand-dye three natural fiber silk &/or bamboo scarves or squares to take home or gift to loved ones. If you’ve ever looked into using Natural Dyes, you may have been intimidated by the many facets of the process. We’ll cover them all–scour, mordant, preparation of natural dye, basic Shibori dye resist methods, natural dyeing & finishing–in great detail so you can get to creating with natural color today. All materials included.

Students will receive an ‘Intro to Natural Dyes’ booklet that covers the entire process in detail, three natural fiber scarves to dye and Shibori, and samples from the dye pots. Students are also invited to bring one or two glass jars (may be used/cleaned jars or new ones–no plastic containers as dye will be hot!) to take home dye at the end of class to continue to explore and experiment at home. Mordant will be on-hand for $10-12 if students would like to purchase for future home-use.

This workshop is held outdoors, so we suggest:
• Dress in layers, bring a jacket, hat, apply sunscreen (if needed) so you can adjust to the weather.
• Bring water/beverage.

• Bring an apron or wear comfortable clothes that can get messy.
• Optionally, students are invited to bring one or two glass jars with tight-sealing lids (can be old jars that are clean or new jars) to take home natural dye from the pots to continue to experiment and explore at home. Dye will be hot from our use, so a glass jar (no plastic containers) with a good seal is a must to safely transport the dye.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
Always interested in finding ways to add harmony, beauty and depth to my life and space, my journey with fiber and textiles began as a child. I adored piles of colorful yarn and fabric. I had always felt, that in some other life, I’d been someone who breathed life into these mediums. As my path wound its way, I fell in love with the nature of story and pursued Literature & Ethnic Studies at UC Berkeley. After Peace Corps service in a tiny village in the Amazon Rainforest, I returned to California and spent the next decade working, starting a family, and eventually, exploring fiber arts. I learned to weave at a Cistercian monastery on the Lost Coast of California, and quickly found my life-long passion. I am nurtured, connected and aligned while weaving. And Intuitive Weaving, as I call it, has been a place of unpacking emotions; subconsciously discovering new frontiers; understanding intertwinement; and learning to be gracious, not just with the world, but with myself. My small business, ANINI Designs, now specializes in offering a variety of craft supplies — natural dyes, natural fiber dyeables, and handwoven &/or hand-dyed textiles. I enjoy creating a sustainable, eco-friendly, inspiring future of mindfully making, exploring and teaching these craft mediums to you. – Jeanine Ertl, Owner, Weaver, Natural Dyer & Educator at ANINI Designs

I learned so much about natural dying with natural dyes through the hands-on practice in class, the instruction booklet provided and exposure to written resources. Jeanine is a wonderful teacher – very knowledgeable and skilled yet relaxed enough about content and methods to make students feel comfortable and capable. Pacing of content and process was excellent – it is a full and fulfilling day! A special delight – everyone goes home with 3 beautiful scarves that they dyed in class!
