In this 4-hour workshop, the instructor will guide students through drafting a personalized A-line skirt pattern based on their body measurements. Students will learn to finish the skirt with an elastic waistband, choosing different options for placement. Students receive guidance throughout the workshop, ensuring they gain the skills to sew a skirt tailored to their unique fit, and by the end of the class, leave with a skirt, their custom pattern, and a step-by-step instruction document to help continue their sewing practice at home.

MATERIALS: Students should plan to bring their own washed and ironed fabric to class. Fabric MUST be woven — no knits (this means no stretch). Depending on the length of your desired skirt, you should plan to bring the following fabric/yardage (choose your skirt length and purchase fabric in the below quantity):

*For a mini skirt, bring 1 yard of fabric.
*For a short skirt, bring 1.5 yards.
*For a knee-length skirt, bring 2 yards.
*For a midi skirt, bring 2.5 yards.
Bring 1 spool of matching thread to sew with (we recommend Gutermann polyester thread)
Bring 1″ wide or 1.5″wide elastic for the waistband 18″ long
For local fabric & sewing materials, Material Happiness is nearby. Also note that upcycling fabric from a curtain panel or tablecloth may also work for this project. All fabric should be washed and ironed before class.
We will have a few sets of skirt fabric & thread on-hand in case someone needs fabric for class (color and yardage will be limited). If you’d like to purchase a fabric/thread kit from us for use in class, please make a $10 donation to San Diego Craft Collective here before class and let us know you’ll be needing a kit in the drop-down menu upon sign-up.
REQUIREMENT: If you are new to using a sewing machine, you must take Family & Beginner Sewing 101 & Family & Beginner Sewing 102 first. In order to enroll in this class, students must know how to thread and use a/their sewing machine, have a basic understanding of fabric cutting and iron pressing techniques, and be comfortable with beginner sewing techniques.

This class is ideal for ages 16+yrs, or ages 12-15yrs are welcome to attend with an adult to support.
