Children age 6+ are welcome!

Welcome to Craft Collective’s Organic Garden Club! It’s a weekly space where kids enjoy a harvest-culinary-prepared treat each week as they learn all about plot planning, companion planting, organic gardening maintenance, harvesting, seed saving, composting, and activities that progress the garden with each season. Garden Club gives kids an opportunity to become good stewards of the garden as they see firsthand the impact of their efforts.

Gardening is proven to have a positive, grounding impact on mood and brain chemistry for all ages, but especially for children. Working in the garden helps kids grow & expand in so many ways! Kids practice and hone fine motor skills; use their five senses to learn about their environment; get excited about food and making healthy, nutritious choices; and feel connected to a larger picture and purpose in life. When we grow our own food, we are all more connected to it, and kids are especially more apt to eat things they’ve grown themselves in the garden!

Our organic & edible garden is a wonderful space we’ve developed to teach the community about how gardening in a small space can be quite abundant. The garden hosts several varieties of organic fresh fruits, herbs and vegetables, and is maintained by Craft Collective and super-gardener and educator Mia Vaughnes, of Good Neighbor Gardens.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
Mama Mia (Mia Vaughnes) was raised by a growing and foraging family. She picked wild berries and asparagus with her mother as a child.  This shared pastime served as a strong foundation for their close relationship. In 1987 Mia started an organic food cart at UCSD supporting local organic farmers.  There was just a handful at the time, but she was one of the early pioneers who taught students the importance of eating “organic” at a time when the word was not yet in most people’s consciousness. Mis is the co-founder of Good Neighbor Gardens, a company who farms yards and schools in San Diego homes to deliver organic, locally grown, pesticide-free produce through a CSA model. Our space-efficient, eco-friendly and community minded operation is one from which everyone stands to benefit.
