In this 2‑week Sewing Fundamentals & Garment Construction series, Instructor and Professional Sewist Joan Mathison will guide you through hands‑on practice of essential construction techniques commonly used in garment and craft sewing. You’ll learn which presser foot to use, how to adjust machine settings, and which tools support a successful sewing outcome. Each 2-week Sewing Fundamentals series focuses on methods and applications that can be used throughout the assembly process, and the skills taught are fully interchangeable. These 2‑week series can be taken in any order—take one, take all, or repeat a series to further hone your skills with Joan’s expert guidance.

In this series, we will cover: Pockets: Side Seam, Welt & Jeans. A pocket is not just a pocket. There are patch pockets, pockets with flaps, inside pockets, single and double welt pockets. How do we choose which pocket to put where? In this series, we’ll answer that question and focus on the fun of creating pockets and integrating them into the design of your garment.

REQUIREMENT: All levels of sewers are welcome to these Sewing Fundamentals classes, however, if you are completely new to using a sewing machine, you must take Family & Beginner Sewing 101 & Family & Beginner Sewing 102 first. If you have experience from elsewhere, that’s also fine. In order to enroll in this class, a student must know how to thread and use a/their sewing machine, have a basic understanding of fabric cutting and iron pressing techniques, and be comfortable with beginner sewing techniques.

MACHINE OPTION: It’s ideal to learn on your own sewing machine, but you may also borrow and learn on one of ours. Please note, if bringing your own sewing machine it is very important to make sure it is fully functional. You will need all the cords, the manual, the presser foot, at least 1 bobbin and the bobbin case. Check this ahead of time.

All materials are included.

This class is appropriate for ages 13+yrs.
