Basket Weaving | Basket Caddy with Curls$100.00 Learn to weave a basket! Select a date from the drop-down menu. Basketry is an ancient art, practiced by many peoples and cultures. Traditional basket makers used readily available materials, such as sweet grass, pine needles, willow, and thin strips of ash or oak. Marsha teaches Appalachian-style basketry which is a functional form of basketry used for everyday activities. Thus, the basket names often reflect their functions, such as Market Basket, Egg Basket, Herb Drying Basket, and others. The Caddy with Curls includes great beginning skills in a fun, functional basket. Use it filled with flowers as a centerpiece, filled with condiments as a caddy, or as your imagination pictures it. You’ll learn how to create a filled base, create and lash on a rim, practice over-under interrupted weave, insert two handles, and add the curls as embellishments. The basket measures 14” long x 4” wide, and 4” high. No experience necessary. Ages 18+ welcome. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Marsha Orr made her first basket in 1987. “It was a magical experience. The class was in a converted barn in rural upstate New York. Sheep were grazing in the pasture, classical music was playing, and herbal tea was brewing. Beautiful colored reed hung in batches from pegs around me. I was entranced by the ambiance and the process of weaving and was hooked on Basketry from then on.” As she contemplated retirement after 17 years of teaching at CSU, Fullerton, Marsha began teaching basketry through Fullerton Parks and Recreation’s Community classes. She taught there for three years before retiring to Menifee. She says, “I find joy in teaching and practicing this ancient art and seeing the look of discovery and satisfaction as my students create their own basketry art.” Marsha currently teaches at Fallbrook School of the Arts and is a member of the Misti Washington Gourd and Basketry Guild.
