In this introduction course of carving Woodworker Paul Maschka will be sharing the ancient style of green wood hand carving with simple but very precise hand tools–a small carving axe, straight blade carving knife and a curved hook knife. With proper techniques, green wood can be intricately sculpted into extremely beautiful, functional and unique pieces of art. Paul specializes in Viking-era cutlery. This Scandinavian style is still being crafted around the world. In this workshop, students will be creating a straight tea spoon or straight cooking spoon. This class is designed for the beginner as well as more experienced carvers. There is no prerequisite for this class. All of the necessary tools and materials will be available to students for this class. Tools and chopping blocks will be available for purchase after the class. No experience necessary. We work with windows open. • Bring water/beverage. • Wear closed-toe shoes — dropping tools on toes really hurts! • Long hair must be tied back. • Do not wear clothing with flowy sleeves and no dangly jewelry as these items can get caught on tools and machines. DIRECTIONS: Located in Liberty Station’s Arts District, you can find our studio at the end of the hallway on the 1st floor of the Dorothea Laub Music & Arts Center (Bldg 176) at the corner of Roosevelt & Truxtun, next to The Lot movie theater. There is plenty of free parking. Parking Lot Q is behind our studio — enter via the driveway off Dewey. Across the street in the Vons parking lot, it is also free. If you can’t find us, call or text 619.273.3235. CLASS SIZE: 5 min. If the minimum is not met, you will receive a full refund or credit toward another class. REFUNDS: No refunds for tardiness or no-shows. For a refund (minus a 5% processing fee), you must cancel 7 days before the start of the class. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Paul Maschka grew up in the hills around North County San Diego with an intense love of all things from nature. Learning the attributes of wood from trees and shrubs, native and introduced. Paul currently grows ancient rare crops for seed production and teaches organic farming to aspiring farmers. He did an excellent job guiding us through the steps involved in carving a spoon using an axe and small carving knives. Paul encouraged our individual learning and creativity and was also ready to answer questions and offer guidance. Perfect class for both beginners and those with some carving experience. I was initially nervous about carving with an axe but Paul was a fantastic instructor and made us all feel comfortable.
