Join us in the woodshop for this 3-hour scroll saw skills woodworking workshop!

In this scroll saw for beginners class, students will learn the basics of getting started in the hobby. A list of the tools and supplies needed will be provided, along with a description of the blade types and samples of items that can be made with them. Students will also cover a brief overview of cutting techniques, and tips for success at home. We will then go through four hands-on exercises, to help build your skill set and become comfortable using a scroll saw. You will practice cutting curves, sharp turns and straight lines. Afterwards we progress through the steps and learn new techniques alongthe way. You will leave with the items you make throughout the day. Pictured is the final exercise which uses all of the previous skills practiced earlier to complete it.

Materials are provided. We recommend students bring their own eye protection, ear protection & apron, but we have some for borrow if needed. Aprons for sale here.

This workshop is held indoors in our woodshop, so we suggest:
• Dress in layers so you can adjust to the studio temperature. We work with windows open.
• Bring water/beverage.
• Wear c
losed-toe shoes — dropping tools on toes really hurts!
• Long hair must be tied back.
• Do not wear clothing with flowy sleeves and no dangly jewelry as these items can get caught on tools and machines.

DIRECTIONS: Located in Liberty Station’s Arts District, you can find our studio at the end of the hallway on the 1st floor of the Dorothea Laub Music & Arts Center (Bldg 176) at the corner of Roosevelt & Truxtun, next to The Lot movie theater. There is plenty of free parking. Parking Lot Q is behind our studio — enter via the driveway off Dewey. Across the street in the Vons parking lot, it is also free. If you can’t find us, call or text 619.273.3235.

CLASS SIZE: 3 min. If the minimum is not met, you will receive a full refund or credit toward another class.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

“My interest in woodworking began when I was a child watching my father make wooden toys in the garage. I became involved in the Scroll saw hobby approximately 30 years ago, after a fellow employee brought in some samples of their work. I am a former President of the San Diego Seaside Scrollers, and current Vice President of the Regular Cutups in North County, as well as a 1st Prize Winner for Fretwork at the 2024 Del Mar Fair exhibit and honorable mention in years past.

I have learned much along the way and want to share my experiences with you. There are many projects that can be done with a scroll saw. From making simple cutouts, fret work, puzzles, compound cutting, intarsia, marquetry, and more. A scroll saw can cut wood, plastics, bone, and non-ferrous metals ranging in the thickness of a playing card to 2” depending on your saw and blade used.” – Mike Moran
