During this highly interactive workshop, students will be in the garden and learn how loofah grows, how to harvest, and its other little known uses! Did you know it’s edible? Following the loofah harvest and processing, students will handcraft their very own batch of melt & pour soap. Areas of focus include soapmaking safety, recipe formulation, crafting with fragrances, colorants and embeds, molding, curing, labeling, packaging and gift design. Students will walk away with their loofah, and a basic understanding of how to craft their own batch of melt & pour soap at home. Best of all, each student will leave this workshop with plenty of soap for personal use or gifts to loved ones.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS:

ERNESTINE BROWN: The Old Town Soap Company (TOTSC) is a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) founded by Navy Veteran Ernestine Brown who originally used Soapmaking as a form of mental therapy while serving on active duty. Upon realizing the powerful effects of crafting and using all-natural ingredients in her recipes, she was eager to share her products with the world and began selling them at various festivals and farmer’s markets where she established a loyal support base. Ernestine now leads a successful retail store at historic Liberty Public Market in San Diego, California where she takes great pride in training and mentoring her team. A few of The Old Town Soap Company core values include transparency, trust, and teamwork (TTT) which Ernestine believes is one of the many ways to build a successful company and community. Ernestine also gladly shares her business experience and mentorship with the public by providing valuable resources to her local community.
Along with its popular zero-waste & plant-based handcrafted soap, body butter, face serums, essential oils and hair care, The Old Town Soap Company also offers live Soapmaking workshops where students get to experience the therapeutic benefits of Soapmaking using their own curated recipes and creativity. When not at The Old Town Soap Company, Ernestine enjoys spending quality time at home with her kids. She also loves spending time with her three dogs as well as other loved ones. In the years to come, Ernestine hopes to continue expanding her footprint while inspiring humanity through her life’s purpose.

MIA VAUGHNES: Mia was raised by a growing and foraging family. She picked wild berries and asparagus with her mother as a child.  This shared pastime served as a strong foundation for their close relationship. In 1987 Mia started an organic food cart at UCSD supporting local organic farmers.  There was just a handful at the time, but she was one of the early pioneers who taught students the importance of eating “organic” at a time when the word was not yet in most people’s consciousness. Mia is the co-founder of Good Neighbor Gardens, a company who farms yards and schools in San Diego homes to deliver organic, locally grown, pesticide-free produce through a CSA model. Our space-efficient, eco-friendly and community minded operation is one from which everyone stands to benefit.
