In this 2.5-hour workshop, learn the fundamentals of power carving, from safety to the appropriate tools used to create a project. The instructor will introduce the rotary tool and the specific burrs to create sculptural pieces and artistic panels that can be displayed on a wall. The project for this workshop is a freeform method to get comfortable with the tools and learn their capabilities. Students will make either a bud vase or an artistic panel or sculptural piece in this beginner-level workshop. This is an introductory workshop in Power Carving. Other classes offered: Intermediate Power Carving I | Carving a Spoon, Intermediate Power Carving II | Make a Bowl. This workshop is appropriate for ages 18 and older. No experience necessary. A hat and or sunscreen is recommended if it’s warm out. • Bring water/beverage if you need to be comfortable. • Wear closed-toe shoes — dropping tools on toes really hurts! • Long hair must be tied back. • Do not wear clothing with flowy sleeves and no dangly jewelry as these items can get caught on tools and machines. • An apron is recommended. You may borrow, or buy an apron in our studio. You can buy one here. DIRECTIONS: Located in Liberty Station’s Arts District, you can find our studio at the end of the hallway on the 1st floor of the Dorothea Laub Music & Arts Center (Bldg 176) at the corner of Roosevelt & Truxtun, next to The Lot movie theater. There is plenty of free parking. Parking Lot Q is behind our studio — enter via the driveway off Dewey. Across the street in the Vons parking lot, it is also free. If you can’t find us, call or text 619.273.3235. CLASS SIZE: 3 min. If the minimum is not met, you will receive a full refund or credit toward another class. REFUNDS: No refunds for tardiness or no-shows. For a refund (minus a 5% processing fee), you must cancel 7 days before the start of the class. After 7 days, we cannot offer refunds, as materials and supplies have already been purchased. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Cecilia Bencomo started her career as a graphic designer in advertising. After 20 years in that profession, she gave up her job to become a full-time mom to triplets. Cecilia then started teaching herself woodworking. She utilized this new skill to create custom furniture in order to accommodate her kids. Cecilia then turned to Power Carving. She is self taught and has been carving for over 4 years. Cecilia loves to create functional art using an angle grinder and various other power carving tools.
