In this 2-hour intermediate workshop, students are provided with a wooden spoon blank to power carve. The instructor will cover safety, basic carving techniques, and spoon design fundamentals. Functional and decorative spoons are fun to use and display! The instructor will share her tips on achieving beautiful curves within a design. This workshop is designed to teach you how to safely craft your own spoon through power carving. Students should have taken Intro to Power Carving | Basic Safety & Sculptural Panel or have some experience using rotary tools (e.g. a dremel, angle grinder, etc.) before enrolling in this workshop.

This class is appropriate for ages 18 and older. Experience is recommended.

This workshop is held outdoors in our back lot, so we suggest:
• Dress in layers so you can adjust to the outside temperature. A  hat and or sunscreen is recommended if it’s warm out.
• Bring water/beverage if you need to be comfortable.
• Wear closed-toe shoes — dropping tools on toes really hurts!
• Long hair must be tied back.
• Do not wear clothing with flowy sleeves and no dangly jewelry as these items can get caught on tools and machines.
• An apron is recommended. You may borrow, or buy an apron in our studio. You can buy one here.

DIRECTIONS: Located in Liberty Station’s Arts District, you can find our studio at the end of the hallway on the 1st floor of the Dorothea Laub Music & Arts Center (Bldg 176) at the corner of Roosevelt & Truxtun, next to The Lot movie theater. There is plenty of free parking. Parking Lot Q is behind our studio — enter via the driveway off Dewey. Across the street in the Vons parking lot, it is also free. If you can’t find us, call or text 619.273.3235.

CLASS SIZE: 3 min. If the minimum is not met, you will receive a full refund or credit toward another class.

REFUNDS: No refunds for tardiness or no-shows. For a refund (minus a 5% processing fee), you must cancel 7 days before the start of the class. After 7 days, we cannot offer refunds, as materials and supplies have already been purchased.

TRANSFERS: You may transfer your enrollment spot to someone else, but transfers must happen before the workshop begins. Please email us to let us know who’s coming.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
Cecilia Bencomo started her career as a graphic designer in advertising.  After 20 years in that profession, she gave up her job to become a full-time mom to triplets.  Cecilia then started teaching herself woodworking.  She utilized this new skill to create custom furniture in order to accommodate her kids.

Cecilia then turned to Power Carving.  She is self taught and has been carving for over 4 years.  Cecilia loves to create functional art using an angle grinder and various other power carving tools.  She loves to share her knowledge by traveling the country teaching and demonstrating.
