Instructor-artist Lydia Kardos teaches this introductory ceramic handbuilding course for Teens. This month-long series is full of hands-on, hand building techniques in clay. Students will create functional and non-functional ceramic art. They’ll learn how to create with coils, slab construction and clay pinching methods. See the beauty of the final results as your pieces come out of the kiln. Students will create multiple pieces and learn how to glaze finished artwork.

All materials included. Projects are changed regularly, so students can return month after month to continue to develop their skills!

Drop-ins are welcome! Is your teen curious about taking this class? Choose ‘Drop-in Date’ from the drop-down menu (please purchase 48 hours in advance, so we can have supplies ready). We welcome drop-in students at the first class of each month-long series. If your teen wants to continue, we will apply this drop-in payment toward the month’s total cost.

This course may be held outdoors during warmer months, so we suggest:
• Dress in layers, bring a hat, apply sunscreen (if needed) so you can adjust to the weather.
• Bring water/beverage.
• Wear closed-toe shoes. Dropping tools on feet really hurts!
• Bring an apron or wear comfortable clothes that can get messy.

DIRECTIONS: Located in Liberty Station’s Arts District, you can find our studio at the end of the hallway on the 1st floor of the Dorothea Laub Music & Arts Center (Bldg 176) at the corner of Roosevelt & Truxtun, next to The Lot movie theater. There is plenty of free parking. Parking Lot Q is behind our studio — enter via the driveway off Dewey. Across the street in the Vons parking lot, it is also free. If you can’t find us, call or text 619.273.3235.

CLASS SIZE: 3 Min/6 Max. If the minimum is not met, you will receive a full refund or credit toward another class. Some classes welcome one-day visits. Purchase your child’s drop in ticket from the drop-down menu at least 48 hours in advance so we can have materials prepped.

REFUNDS: No refunds for tardiness or no-shows. No make-up days. For a refund (minus a 5% processing fee), you must cancel 7 days before the start of the class. Less than 7 days, you can only receive credit toward a future class as materials have already been purchased.

TRANSFERS: You may transfer your enrollment space to someone else, but transfers must happen for the entire course, and before the course begins. Please email us to let us know who’s coming.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
Lydia Kardos is a San Diego visual artist working with a focus in ceramics. Her work in photography, exploring narratives through imagery, color composition and the female form as well as her work in painting and drawing have contributed to her sculptural voice. The contrasts of living in New York City, Mexico and California have deeply influenced her visual language. A conversation of home, surroundings and connection to these spaces can be seen in mark making, impasto and scumbling techniques in her glaze work as well as surface design, texture and more importantly color. The importance and inspiration of magical realism is apparent in her description of objects and spaces as her ceramics tell stories with texture, color, abstract shapes and biomorphic forms. Lydia invites the viewer to an intimate space between two worlds of the present and fantasy through exaggerated and vivid colors and her objects as characters, undulating in form, lush with texture. Her most recent exhibitions were in Boston, MA, New York, NY, and Brooklyn, NY.
