We are excited to offer this fun Sunday workshop for Fiber Fest! Join us for a morning of creative mending in good company.
Come learn simple hand sewing techniques in order to turn your damaged clothing items into a one-of-a-kind garments. In this 2-hour class with upcycling sewist Keira McGee, you will practice hand sewing stitches and have the opportunity to repair a piece of your own clothing. Please be prepared with an item or two from your closet that are in need of some mending. We suggest items such as jeans and button down shirts, but feel free to bring several options. All other materials will be provided by the instructor.

This class is appropriate for ages 14 years and older.

This workshop is part of Craft Collective’s 2nd annual Fiber Fest! Join in the main day of festivities on Saturday, June 14th, for a day filled with fiber fun! It’ll be a vibrant celebration of natural textiles and sustainability, bringing together fiber artists, artisans, sustainability advocates, and local farmers. On June 14th, we’ll host a live demonstration of sheep shearing, more live artist-artisan demonstrations, interactive craft for families, artist vendors, food and more. This event is designed to build community within the Southern California Fibershed, showcasing the journey of natural textiles from sheep to finished fabric. This course will be held outdoors, so we suggest:
• Dress in layers so you can adjust to the temperature.
• Bring water/beverage if you need to be comfortable.

DIRECTIONS: Located in Liberty Station’s Arts District, you can find our studio at the end of the hallway on the 1st floor of the Dorothea Laub Music & Arts Center (Bldg 176) at the corner of Roosevelt & Truxtun, next to The Lot movie theater. There is plenty of free parking. Parking Lot Q is behind our studio — enter via the driveway off Dewey. Across the street in the Vons parking lot, it is also free. If you can’t find us, call or text 619.273.3235.

CLASS SIZE: 3 min. If the minimum is not met, you will receive a full refund or credit toward another class.

REFUNDS: No refunds for tardiness or no-shows. For a refund (minus a 5% processing fee), you must cancel 7 days before the start of the class. After 7 days, we cannot offer refunds, as materials and supplies have already been purchased.

TRANSFERS: You may transfer your enrollment spot to someone else, but transfers must happen before the workshop begins. Please email us to let us know who’s coming.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

Keira McGee is a textile and fiber artist. She works in Costume Design for theater and film, and has a passion for sustainable clothing design. Originally from the East Coast, she has worked on several broadway shows including The Lion King, Hamilton, and The Rockettes Spring Spectacular. She currently works in the costume shop at La Jolla Playhouse while simultaneously running a sustainable clothing company, Keira Designs. She focuses on up-cycled, one-of-a-kind clothing and is now partnering with REI to bring used gear back to life.
