Ceramics | Raku Firing Workshop Select a date from the drop-down menu. In this Raku firing workshop, you’ll explore a dramatic and hands-on ceramic technique with deep roots in 16th-century Japan. Originally developed for tea ceremony wares, Raku involves removing red-hot pottery from the kiln and placing it into combustible materials like sawdust, straw, or newspaper. The sudden change in temperature and intense smoke create striking, often unpredictable effects. No two pieces ever come out alike, making each firing a truly unique experience. This workshop is led by artist Steve Dilley, founder of The Veterans Art Project. VETART is a community-based arts organization serving Veterans, Active Duty service members, spouses, dependents, caregivers, and the broader community through process-driven Deep Arts Engagement (D.A.E.©) and art therapy. In this workshop, students may bring up to 3 pieces of bisqued pottery (midfire or high fire clay only). Please keep pieces under 12 inches tall and 6 inches wide. Upon purchase, please leave us a note on what you expect to bring with you and approximate dimensions so we can plan accordingly. If you don’t have pottery ready to fire but would like to take this class, we will have pieces of bisque pottery available for purchase.
