Kids | Clay & Garden: Fairy Garden & Herbalism Camp, 7-12yrs

$375.00

Kids explore working with clay & herbalism in the organic garden!

Monday through Friday
June 22 – 26, from 1 – 4pm

Ages 7-12 years welcome! In this week-long camp, kids will explore ceramics while making fun fairy garden decorations to take home. Kids will also learn all about herbs & herbalism–focusing on learning how to identify herbs while making herbal remedies and incorporating herbs into meals. Kids will learn to harvest, create plant profiles, make herb-infused honey or a simple herbal remedy, and make a yummy treat to share with the herb of the day. We will spend time in the garden watching the plants and how they subtly move and shift towards the sun, enjoying their scents, textures, and drawing them. The children will learn how to activate all their senses to listen to the messages the plants have to share with us.
At the end of the week, each child will take home their plant profile-recipe booklet.

Campers should plan to bring a snack (no peanuts or candy, please) and refillable bottle of water to camp each day.

INSTRUCTORS:

Lydia Kardos is a San Diego visual artist working with a focus in ceramics. Her work in photography, exploring narratives through imagery, color composition and the female form as well as her work in painting and drawing have contributed to her sculptural voice. The contrasts of living in New York City, Mexico and California have deeply influenced her visual language. A conversation of home, surroundings and connection to these spaces can be seen in mark making, impasto and scumbling techniques in her glaze work as well as surface design, texture and more importantly color. The importance and inspiration of magical realism is apparent in her description of objects and spaces as her ceramics tell stories with texture, color, abstract shapes and biomorphic forms. Lydia invites the viewer to an intimate space between two worlds of the present and fantasy through exaggerated and vivid colors and her objects as characters, undulating in form, lush with texture. Her most recent exhibitions were in Boston, MA, New York, NY, and Brooklyn, NY.

Nazdira Cuevas is a community herbalist, educator, and land tender based in San Diego (Kumeyaay Territory). She specializes in creating seasonal remedies using plants from her own garden and teaching others how to connect with the land. Nazdira loves to share her ancestral wisdom and deep love for plants. Her teachings focus on: reciprocal relationships with nature; intuitive, earth-centric healing; making personal medicine and herbal creations; and, reconnecting with the earth as a source of nourishment.
