Ceramics | Raku Firing Workshop$40.00 Select a date from the drop-down menu. 18+years welcome to participate in firing! All ages are welcome to attend to watch and enjoy the potluck! Bring a food or drink item to share! In this off-site Raku firing workshop, students will learn all about the process while firing their pieces at The Veterans Art Project in Vista, California. You’ll explore a dramatic and hands-on ceramic technique with deep roots in 16th-century Japan. Originally developed for tea ceremony wares, Raku involves removing red-hot pottery from the kiln and placing it into combustible materials like sawdust, straw, or newspaper. The sudden change in temperature and intense smoke create striking, often unpredictable effects. No two pieces ever come out alike, making each firing a truly unique experience. This workshop is led by artist Steve Dilley, founder of VETART, a community-based arts organization serving Veterans, Active Duty service members, spouses, dependents, caregivers, and the broader community through process-driven Deep Arts Engagement (D.A.E.©) and art therapy. This workshop will be held off-site at VETART, located at 2422 Cades Way, in Vista, California. In this workshop, students may bring up to 2 pieces of bisqued pottery (midfire or high fire clay only). Please keep pieces under 12 inches tall and 6 inches wide. Upon purchase, please leave us a note on what you expect to bring with you and approximate dimensions so we can plan accordingly. If you don’t have pottery ready to fire but would like to take this class, we will have pieces of bisque pottery available for purchase. Please bring a dish to share! There will be a potluck inside the VetArt clay studio for before, during and after the Raku firing. Safety: For this workshop, students must wear closed toed shoes (no sandals) and full length pants. Please be sure to not where any flammable clothing (avoid synthetic fibers). If you have long hair, please tie it back.
