If you need to purchase lumber from us, please call ahead to arrange. This is not an instructional class. There will be no instruction. By signing up for Woodshop Open Studio, you agree that you will come and work safely and ask questions when needed about the safe use of machines and tools. Our studio monitors are on-site for help with machine safety, but not to provide instruction on completing a project. Ages 18+years old. NOTE: No reclaimed or construction-grade lumber is allowed (because disastrous things can happen, and we like our sharp tools!). REQUIREMENT: You must have taken San Diego Craft Collective’s Intro to the Woodshop course to participate. For more details and woodshop rules, please scroll to the bottom of the page. Our woodshop monitors are on-site to help with machine and tool safety — not to provide instruction on completing a project. If you need assistance building your project, contact us for a private lesson or enroll in more woodworking classes with us. What should I bring to Open Studio? Please bring your own personal safety equipment (hearing and eye protection and dust mask), tape measure, an apron if needed, and comfortable clothes that do not include flowy sleeves or dangly strings– which can get caught in machines and cause injury. Closed-toe shoes are required. Please label your personal tools and items with your name. Long hair must be tied back. What should I NOT bring to Open Studio? Construction-grade lumber and soft woods (pine, douglas fir, or softwoods, especially if they’re not fully dried or kiln-dried– wet wood can set off the Sawstop brake system). No reclaimed or recycled lumber may go through our machines. Urban timber that has been milled and dried is ok. No smelly finishes containing VOCs may be applied in the shop. This includes epoxy. What is construction-grade lumber? Construction grade lumber is pine and fir, and most softwoods. They are not allowed in the shop because they contain sap which gums up the tools and they are also not always kiln-dried which can set off the brake on our SawStop tablesaw.
