Learn foldforming and the art of patinas with award winning metal artist and blacksmith, Pat Downing. In this all-day class, students will learn about safety, tools, and the basic methods of both foldforming and patinas. The class will consist of 3 hours of forming techniques and 3 hours focusing on patinas, with a one-hour lunch break. This is a hands-on techniques class designed to show how one can achieve folds and then apply patinas to finished pieces.

This workshop is held outdoors, so we suggest:
• Dress in layers so you can adjust to the outside temperature.
• Bring water in a refillable bottle if you need to be comfortable.
• Wear closed-toe shoes — dropping tools on toes really hurts!
• Long hair must be tied back.
• Do not wear clothing with flowy sleeves and no dangly jewelry as these items can get caught on tools and machines.
• An apron is recommended. You may borrow, or buy an apron in our studio. You can buy one here.

DIRECTIONS: Located in Liberty Station’s Arts District, you can find our studio at the end of the hallway on the 1st floor of the Dorothea Laub Music & Arts Center (Bldg 176) at the corner of Roosevelt & Truxtun, next to The Lot movie theater. There is plenty of free parking. Parking Lot Q is behind our studio — enter via the driveway off Dewey. Across the street in the Vons parking lot, it is also free. If you can’t find us, call or text 619.273.3235.

CLASS SIZE: 5 min/8 max. If the minimum is not met, you will receive a full refund or credit toward another class.

REFUNDS: No refunds for tardiness or no-shows. For a refund (minus a 5% processing fee), you must cancel 7 days before the start of the class. After 7 days, we cannot offer refunds, as materials and supplies have already been purchased.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

Pat Downing has always been creative. His career as an artist has taken many twists and turns – first as a musician and photographer, then as a goldsmith, and later a woodworker. It wasn’t until 2001 when he was invited to hang out with a group of knife makers that he discovered the things he could do with fire and metal. He has been obsessed ever since. Pat is now a full-time metal artist working out of his home studio in San Diego where he creates unique sculptures of all shapes and sizes. Some are functional. Some simply look cool, but all are as unique as the artist who created them. Inspired by everything from movies to architecture to nature, Pat always incorporates some element of the unexpected into his work from uniquely colored patinas to glass, marbles and stones, creating a style that is distinctly his.

Pat fuses traditional blacksmithing with contemporary techniques and is quickly becoming one of Southern California’s leading experts on Foldforming, an origami-like process folding sheet metal into dramatic shapes. Though his work is far from traditional, Pat is very aware of the storied roots of blacksmithing, having spent years demonstrating traditional blacksmithing techniques to tourists and school groups in San Diego.
